Marc Shaiman will be honored with the prestigious
ASCAP Henry Mancini Award for Career Achievement at the 22nd Annual ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards, it was announced today by President and Chairman Marilyn Bergman. The invitation-only gala will take place on April 17, 2007 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The event will also honor the composers of the top box office film music and the most performed television music of 2006.
Marc Shaiman is a composer, lyricist, arranger and performer for films, television and theatre. He has received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Score for
The American President, The First Wives Club and
Patch Adams, and Best Original Song for "A Wink and a Smile" from
Sleepless in Seattle and "Blame Canada" from
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. He has also composed, adapted and arranged music, served as music supervisor and written lyrics for over 50 other films, including
When Harry Met Sally, Beaches, Sister Act, City Slickers, The Addams Family, A Few Good Men, In & Out and
George of The Jungle. He has received four Emmy Award nominations one for his work on
Saturday Night Live, and three for his collaboration on music for the Academy Awards, winning in 1992 for co-writing Billy Crystal's "Oscar Medleys" for the 64 th Annual Academy Awards. He has also earned a Tony and a Grammy Award for the score to the smash hit Broadway musical,
Hairspray. In 2002, he was honored with the Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Music-In-Film award at the 69th annual Hollywood Film Festival. His upcoming projects include the new film version of
Hairspray (2007) starring John Travolta, Queen Latifah and Michelle Pfeiffer. Other projects include
The Bucket List (2007), which is Shaiman's tenth collaboration with director Rob Reiner and stars Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, as well as
Slammer (2008) starring Sarah Jessica Parker.
"Marc is a multi-talented composer and songwriter with a career that spans television, feature films and, of course, his great success on Broadway," said Marilyn Bergman. “We are very proud to celebrate his achievements by honoring him with ASCAP's Henry Mancini Award."
The ASCAP Henry Mancini Award is awarded to composers in recognition of their outstanding achievements and contributions to the world of film and television music. Previous recipients include John Debney, Mark Isham, Quincy Jones, Michel Legrand, Randy Newman, James Newton Howard, Johnny Mandel, Alan Silvestri, Howard Shore and Hans Zimmer, among others.
The 22nd Annual ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards is part of ASCAP's "I Create Music Week" an entire week of events being held in Los Angeles to celebrate the voice of the music creator.
