The American Society of Composers,
Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) honored the British
writer and publisher members of the PRS, for significant
performances of their works in the US during 2003,
during a special reception held at The Grosvenor
House Hotel in London on October 13, 2004.
Steven "Lenky" Marsden was named the enviable Songwriter
of the Year for his three award-winning songs "Get
Busy," "Never Leave You," and "No Letting Go." Song
of the Year honors went to "Get Busy" written by Steven
"Lenky" Marsden and Sean Paul, and BMG Music Publishing
Ltd. picked up the Publisher of the Year award as
the music publisher with the most award-winning songs.
Petula Clark and Freda Payne celebrated the work
of ASCAP board member and legendary songwriter Hal
David with a stunning live performance of his work,
which includes such classics as "Raindrops Keep
Falling On My Head," "I Say A Little Prayer,"
"Alfie," and "This (Girl's) In Love
With You," which was recorded by Petula Clark.
2004 marks the 90th anniversary
of the founding of ASCAP. As the worldís largest
Performing Rights Organization, ASCAP has over
190,000 composer, lyricist and music publisher
members with a repertory of more than 7.5 million
copyrighted musical works of every style and genre,
in addition to the repertories of over 100 affiliated
foreign performing rights organizations. ASCAP
is committed to protecting the rights of its members
by licensing and collecting royalties for the public
performance of their copyrighted works, and then
distributing these fees to the Societyís members
based on performances. ASCAPís Board of Directors
is made up solely of writers and publishers, elected
by the membership every two years.
