THE ASCAP FOUNDATION HONORS ASPIRING
FILM AND TELEVISION MUSIC COMPOSERS THROUGH TWO NEW TALENT DEVELOPMENT AND MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Two aspiring film and television music
composers were honored by The ASCAP Foundation recently
through two newly created talent development and music
education programs. Ted Masur, from
San Francisco, CA, received the inaugural ASCAP
Foundation Steve Kaplan TV and Film Studies Scholarship,
and Greg Chun, from Manhattan Beach,
CA, received the inaugural ASCAP Foundation
Harold Arlen Film & TV Award. The presentations
were made in conjunction with the 16th annual ASCAP
Television and Film Scoring Workshop in Los Angeles
that concluded on July 29, 2004. A selection committee
consisting of both ASCAP staff and industry professionals
involved with the workshop chose the honorees based
on their excellence and professionalism, musical ability
and career potential.
The ASCAP Foundation Steve Kaplan TV and
Film Studies Scholarship was established
by Steve's widow, Shelby Daniel, and his brother Andy
Kaplan, to honor the late Steve Kaplan and his commitment
to music education. The annual scholarship will provide
financial assistance for one participant to further
his/her career in the field of television and film
composing at the completion of the annual ASCAP Television
& Film Scoring Workshop. Masur, who earned a B.A.
from Yale University and a M.M. from Indiana University,
was presented with the scholarship by Richard Bellis,
composer and workshop mentor, and Shelby Daniel, ASCAP
writer/vocalist.
Sam and Joan Arlen, the son and daughter-in-law of
Harold Arlen, established The ASCAP Foundation
Harold Arlen Film & TV Award in recognition
of Harold Arlen's 100th birthday, in 2005. The award,
which will be given annually, not only honors Harold
Arlen but will also make a difference in the lives
of numerous music creators. Greg Chun is a native
of Chicago and a graduate of Stanford University.
He also holds a M.S. in Computer Science from UCSD
(University of San Diego).
Highly respected as a composer, performer and producer,
Steve Kaplan's talents and credits span 25 years,
and encompass multiple musical genres. As an award-winning
composer, Steve contributed songs and musical scores
to many popular television shows and films. He received
four ASCAP Film and Television Awards for his music
and themes on the syndicated game shows Jeopardy
and Wheel of Fortune.
Harold Arlen composed over 400 songs including favorites
like "It's Only A Paper Moon," "Stormy
Weather," "I've Got the World on A String,"
and "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive." He
also wrote scores for Broadway musicals and Hollywood
films including the music for the film The Wizard
of Oz, which featured the award-winning song
"Over the Rainbow," recently named the Number
1 song on AFI's list of Top 100 Movie Songs.
The ASCAP Television and Film Scoring Workshop program
was initiated in 1988 and has gained international
recognition throughout the years. The intensive month-long
program focuses on the many important business and
creative elements film composers must face in this
competitive world, and features prestigious guest
speakers from the highest levels of the film and television
music industry. The workshop is widely regarded as
a major educational and networking opportunity for
aspiring composers. A total of 15 applicants from
across the country and from as far away as Australia,
Austria, Brazil, Canada, Philippines, and Spain were
selected by a jury of leading film composers to participate
in the 2004 workshop. (See attached list).
Since 1975 The ASCAP Foundation has been dedicated
to supporting American music creators and encouraging
the development of American music through educational
and talent development programs. Included in these
are songwriting workshops, grants, scholarships, music
education programs, and public service projects for
senior composers and lyricists. The programs of The
ASCAP Foundation are supported by contributions from
ASCAP members and from music lovers throughout the
United States.
