Rufus Reid

A special edition of JazZcap — a jazz showcase series sponsored by the ASCAP Foundation, with support from Sibelius — featuring the Rufus Reid Quintet will take place Tuesday, February 26 at The Cutting Room (19 West 24th Street, between Broadway and Sixth Avenue) in Manhattan. Performing with Rufus Reid will be Scott Wendholt, trumpet; Rich Perry, tenor saxophone; Sumi Tonooka, piano and; Tim Horner, drums. The band will perform 2 sets, beginning at 7:30 and 8:30 pm, respectively. There will be a cover charge of $10. (Those attending the early set are invited to remain for the second set without additional charge.)

Rufus Reid, one of today's premiere bassists on the international jazz scene, with his reputation firmly established in the education arena. Reid received The ASCAP/IAJE Commission for Established Jazz Composers, which was premiered at the 2007 IAJE Conference in New York City. The 2006 Sackler Commission Prize was awarded to Rufus, which allowed him to fulfill a dream he has had to compose a work dedicated to the artist, Elizabeth Catlett. He won the Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Award for his composition, "Skies Over Emilia." This has led to further commissions. He is writing for string orchestra, jazz ensembles large and small, and double bass ensemble pieces.
