ASCAP Composers Take On the World Soundtrack Awards

For yet another year, ASCAP members and international affiliates made up the bulk of nominations for the World Soundtrack Awards. The ninth annual Awards, the closing event of the Ghent International Film Festival in Ghent, Belgium, will be held on October 17, 2009.

In addition to the presentation of awards for film music achievement in the past year, ASCAP legend Marvin Hamlisch will be presented with the World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award. Hamlisch composed the unforgettable scores to films like The Way We Were and The Sting, and also wrote the music to A Chorus Line. He is one of only two composers to have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, a Tony and a Pulitzer Prize.

Every year the advisory board of the World Soundtrack Academy chooses a "Discovery of the Year" to celebrate emerging film composing talent. This year, four out of the five nominees are ASCAP members or affiliates. Past winners include ASCAP composers Craig Armstrong, Michael Giacchino, Klaus Badelt, Antonio Pinto and Marc Streitenfeld, as well as SADAIC composers Daniel Tarrab and Andres Goldstein, who license their works through ASCAP in the U.S

The World Soundtrack Awards will be followed by a concert of film music, performed by The Brussels Philharmonic under the baton of Dirk Brossé. This year's concert will feature the music of both Hamlisch and Streitenfeld, who earned the World Soundtrack Discovery Award last year with his soundtrack for American Gangster.

ASCAP congratulates all of our nominated composers:
