studies composition at The Juilliard School’s
Pre-College Division and piano at the Manhattan
School of Music. She has appeared on CNN,
ABC, NBC and International Radio. Yo-Yo Ma
and Christopher O’Reilly performed,
“Soliloquy”, the second movement
of her cello and piano sonata on “From
The Top”, a nationally syndicated radio
program. She is also a member of the New York
Youth Symphony’s “Making Score”
Program for young composers. Athena enjoys
reading and writing, math, computer graphics
and soccer.
Preben
Antonsen

Berkeley, CA Preben
is in the fifth grade and began studying piano
and composition when he was 6 years old. He
also studies composition John Adams and violin
with Debra Schwartz. In 1999, he received an
award from the Music Teachers Association of
California for his Suite of the Birds for piano.

A SPOOKY NIGHT
Los Angeles, CA Kit,
our youngest winner this year aready has a catalog
of interesting compositions, many of which have
received public performance. Kit is not only
a formidable talent as composer and pianist,
but he has just completed his first year at
Utah State University , where he studied Biology,
Calculus, English, History and Music in his
Freshman Year.
He has already performed as soloist with the
ProArt Symphony Orchestra in the Mozart piano
Concerto, K491, and has received many piano
awards, and attended master classes in the US
and abroad. He also performed at the Classical
Music Luncheon of the Grammy Awards.
He speaks 4 languages and has already travelled
extensively. Kit enjoys skiing, swimming and
designing and flying paper airplanes.
Stephen
Cabell, Jr.
EARBOX ESSAY for Large Orchestra

Owensboro, KY
Stephen is a junior at the Interlochen
Arts Academy in Michigan where he majors in
Composition and Horn. Stephen conducted the
premiere of his work, “Titan” with
The Owensboro Symphony Orchestra . He recently
conducted the award winning work at Interlochen.
He has attended Music at Maple Mount, a summer
institute for young musicians. Stephen feels
fortunate to have his new works performed and
recorded by the talented students that attend
Interlochen from around the world.
Julia
Scott Carey
HARVEST for Full Orchestra
Duration: 9'
Wellesley, MA Julia
is in the tenth grade at Milton Academy. She
studies composition at the New England Conservatory
of Music as well as theory, piano and voice.
She has received many awards including several
ASCAP Awards yearly since the age of 10. She
has already created a rich and varied catalog.
Her orchestral works have been performed by
many ensembles including the Boston Symphony
Orchestra, the Boston Pops and the New Hampshire
Philharmonic. Julia has been featured on Kid’s
Classical Hour, a nationally syndicated radio
program and NPR’s “From The Top”.
The Award winning work just received it’s
premiere by the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphony
Orchestra as part of the Peer-to-Peer Commissioning
Project. Her music is published by Theodore
Presser.
Kevin Kim
SUITE FOR PIANO

Born in Seoul, Korea
Now lives in Bogota, New Jersey Kevin’s
great talent was first recognized in Korea,
when he was five. At 8, he gave his first public
recital and performed 26 of his own compositions.
He now attends the Mannes College majoring in
Composition and Piano. He performs regularly
at jam sessions at the Puffin Cultural Forum
in New Jersey. Kevin is currently working on
“ Deep Sea Dance”, a work for chamber
ensemble.
Natasha
Sinha
WILD SWANS Quartet for Piano, Violin, Viola
and Cello

Milton, MA
Natasha is in the sixth grade
at Newton Country Day School. She studies composition
and piano at the New England Conservatory of
Music. Her works have been performed by the
New England Conservatory and the Brooklyn Friends
of Chamber Music Society. Natasha has received
several ASCAP Awards and the 2002 Music Teachers
National Association – Warner Brothers
Award. She is a Founder of “Share The
Music” program at Milton Hospital in Massachusetts
and her project, “Animal Feeder”
is currently being displayed at the Smithsonian
Museum in Washington, DC. The project is also
featured in a book, “Creative Projects
with Lego Mindstorm” by MIT’s Media
Lab. Natasha is also an accomplished figure
skater. She has been featured on the American
Music Center’s webzine, NewMusicBox.
Milena
Zhivotovska
SONATINA for Solo Piano

Kiev, Ukraine, now living in New York City
Beginning her piano lessons in
Kiev at age 7, Milena showed promise as a composer
and improvisor by age 10, and studied at the
Kabalevsky School. She emigrated to the United
States last year and now attends the Lucy Moses
School of Music in New York. She received the
New York Community Trust Fellowship in 2001.
