Oakland, CA Mason
is currently a PhD candidate at the University
of California in Berkeley. He received his
Bachelor’s in English Literature and
a Master’s in Composition from a dual
degree program from Columbia University and
The Juilliard School. His awards and honors
include the Leo Kaplan Award for Sounds
of His Animation for Synthesizer and
Orchestra, a Charles Ives Fellowship and Scholarship
from the American Academy of Arts and Letters,
a commission from the Koussevitzky Music Foundation,
and he was Composer- in- Residence with Young
Concert Artists. Mason has attended the ASPEN
School of Music and was a Tanglewood Fellow.
His commissions include works for the Evansville
Philharmonic, The Phoenix Sympony’s
Beethoven Festival, flutist Mimi Stillman,
and clarinetist, Alexander Fiterstein. Mason’s
interests include writing music for the stage
and electronic music.
Robert
Bennett, Jr.
PASTICHE for Baroque Orchestra and Percussion

Burbank, CA
Robert received his Bachelor’s
Degree in Composition and Film Scoring from
Berklee College (MA), where he served as Assistant
Conductor at the Brookline Symphony and as Guest
Conductor with the Berklee Wind Ensemble. He
graduated Summa Cum Laude from Indiana University
with a Master’s Degree and continued his
studies in the Netherlands and Germany with
a DAAD Fellowship. Robert received Honorable
Mention in the ASCAP competition last year.
He has been recognized by the Midwest Composers
Symposium, and SCI. He is an active film composer
and has worked as Assistant to Hans Zimmer.
Reena Esmail
ELEGISM for Solo Cello

Los Angeles, CA Reena
is currently working towards her Bachelor Music
at The Juilliard School. She serves as Outreach
Coordinator of the International Alliance for
Women in Music and is a member of Chamber Music
America, SCI (the Society of Composers Inc.)
and NACUSA. She was valedictorian of her graduating
class at the Los Angeles County High School
for the Arts. Her works have been performed
by the Debussy Trio, Peter Sheridan of the LA
Flute Quartet and Helen Goode – Castro,
clarinetist with the LA Philharmonic. Reena
recently collaborated with dancer/choreographer,
Ellie Moore and poet Annie Wolaver on a chamber
work titled, Enigma, # I which premiered
at Juilliard.
Gabriela
Frank
LEYENDAS: AN ANDEAN WALKABOUT for String Quartet

Berkeley, CA Gaby
holds degrees from Rice University and last
year received her Doctorate from the University
of Michigan in Ann Arbor. An active pianist
and composer, Gaby has performed throughout
the Americas and Europe. Her violin sonata,
written for Sergiu Luca, will be premiered at
the Cascade Music Festival in June. She is composer-
in- residence with the University of Kansas
in conjunction with the Spencer Museum. Gaby
has received many awards, honors and commissions
from; ASCAP, the Theodore Presser Music Foundation,
SCI, Banff Center for the Arts, NEA, Meet The
Composer, Arts International, and the American
Academy of Arts and Letters. Her work has been
recorded on Equilibruim Records and Capstone
Record labels. Gaby has worked as a volunteer
for three years with HASTA (Hispanic Americans
Striving Towards Achievement), a Latino prison
group in Detroit, Michigan.
Stefan
Freund
CONVOLUTION for Clarinet, Trumpet,
Percussion & Piano Solo with Wind Ensemble

Stefan is a candidate for the
DMA degree at Eastman School of Music (May 2002
projected completion) where he also received
his Masters degree. He received his Bachelors
Degree from Indiana University with High Distinction.
He has been commissioned by the Pittsburgh New
Music Ensemble, the Phoenix Symphony’s
Beethoven Festival, the McNeese State University
Wind Ensemble and Pastiche (for the Award winning
work), the New York Youth Symphony, Prism Brass
Quintet, the Verdehr Trio and the ASCAP/SCI
Student Commission. Stefan has received many
ASCAP Awards. He is principal cellist and serves
on the Administrative Board of Alarm Sound.
He also teaches at the Sewanee Summer Music
Festival.
Vivian
Fung
BLAZE for Full Orchestra

New York, NY Vivian
will receive her Doctorate from The Juilliard
School tomorrow, where she also received her
Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
She has earned awards and grants from ASCAP,
and the American Music Center and has attended
residencies at MacDowell, Yaddo, Banff and the
Atlantic Center for the Arts. She will serve
as composer-in residence with the San Jose Chamber
Orchestra for which she is currenlty writing
a new work for the 2003 - 2004 season. Recent
commissions include “Toccata” a
work for piano for the Association of Candaian
Women Composers’ Festival in conjunction
with the Ottawa Chamber Music Society. She is
a faculty member at the Connecticut School of
Music in Westport, CT and she will join the
faculty of The Juilliard School this Fall.
Yotam
Haber
IN SLEEP A KING for Chamber Orchestra

Haifa, Israel Yotam
is currently completing his DMA at Cornell University.
He received his Bachlor of Music with High Honors
from Indiana University. Yotam spent 6 months
in Italy last year studying live electronics
in music. His new chamber opera, based on a
short story by Haruki Murakami, premiered in
Ithaca in April.

Kajcienski
SEVEN for Soprano with Digital Delay and Orchestra

New York, NY Matthew
is receiving his Bachelor’s Degree from
The Juilliard School. The award winning work
was recently performed at Lincoln Center and
“The Seventh Seal” for orchestra
will be performed this week by Ensemble du Monde
at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.
He recently completed a concerto for violin
and orchestra for Andres Cardenez of the Pittsburgh
Symphony and is now writing a work for amplified
voice and orchestra. Matthew also writes for
film and TV. His works have been performed by
Seoul National Radio Symphony, Manhattan Virtuosi
Orchestra and the Debussy Quartet.

received his Master and Bachelor’s Degree’s
from Indiana University. He will begin Doctoral
studies at the Juilliard School this Fall. He
has received several ASCAP Awards, and was a
national winner of the Music Teacher’s
National Association/CPP Belwin Student Competition.
He has received many commissions and is published
by Theodore Presser. As pianist, Martin has
premiered works by many composers.

at Indiana University. He received his Bachelors
from the University of Texas in Austin. His
commissions include Duo 46, None Trio and Ensemble
Eleven. Tony’s music has been featured
on NPR and Dutch National Radio and has been
performed throughout the US and Europe.
Jookang Lee

Seoul, Korea Jookang
received her Doctorate from the Conservatory
of Music at the University of Missouri, Kansas
City. She earned her Masters at Peabody Conservatory
and her Bachelor’s from Sung-Shin Women’s
University in Korea. She recently won First
Prize in the 2002 University of Missouri’s
Orchestral Composition Competition. Jookang’s
music aired on Public Television on “Uniquely
Kansas City” for the city’s 150th
Anniversary. Her work will be recorded by newEar
(contemporary chamber ensemble).

Trento, Italy Paola
received her Bachelor’s and Master’s
Degrees from the Juilliard School. She will
attend the University of Southern California
to pursue her DMA in the fall. She is co-founder
and co-director with Nora Kroll- Rosenbaum of
VisionIntoArt (VIA), a multimedia performance
group. Paola’s music has been performed
by the American Composers Orchestra’s
Whitaker Reading and the Immigrant Voices Series,
the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the New York
Concert Singers, Symphony 21, the Fox Studio
Orchestra. She attended the ASCAP Film Scoring
Workshop in Los Angeles. She is working with
VIA on “MachineDream”, a collaborative
work with music, film and choreography based
on hyperworlds and hyperlinks through multimedia
programming.

Roberts
ABSENCE OF DARK for Viola and Orchestra

Columbus, OH Adam
is pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree at the
Eastman School of Music. He has participated
at Brevard, June in Buffalo, Bowdoin and Gamper
Music Festivals. The award winning work has
also received the Bernard Rogers Prize. His
solo cello work, “Static” received
it’s New York premiere this Spring in
Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. Adam
is writing a work for chamber orchestra for
Musica Nova to be performed next season. He
has also received awards as pianist and is an
advocate for 20th and 21st century music, organizing
concerts and performing premieres.

Rothman
STRING TRIO

Philip received his Bachelor’s,
summa cum laude, from Rice University and a
Master’s from The Juilliard School. He
is Manager of Grant Making Programs at the American
Music Center. He has received several ASCAP
Awards and was an American Symphony Orchestra
League Fellow. His music has been performed
by Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo
Philharmonic Orchestra, Eugene Symphony, National
Philharmonic of Lithuania, and the United States
Military Academy among others and aired on NPR’s
“Performance Today”. In December,
Philip will receive 0his Carnegie Hall debut
with a new work commissioned by the New York
Youth Symphony for it’s 40th Anniversary.
Huang Ruo
THREE PIECES FOR ORCHESTRA

Hai Nan Island, China Huang
Ruo is pursuing his Masters at The Juilliard
School. He received his Bachelors from the Oberlin
Conservatory. Huang Ruo will be a visiting composer
– in – residence at the University
of Georgia next Fall. The American Composer’s
Orchestra performed his music during the Whitaker
Reading Sessions this May. His works have been
performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra under
Wolfgang Sawalisch, Chicago Pro Musica, Cleveland
Chamber Symphony, Niew Ensemble of Amsterdam,
Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, and the Aspen
Contemporary Ensemble. He is a founder of ICE
(the International Contemporary Ensemble) which
will hold a Festival in Chicago this summer.
He is working on commissions for the Dale Warland
Singers and a Violin Concerto for the Queens
Symphony and Cho-Ling Lin.
Matthew
Van Brink
DAL DOSAI Sonata for Flute and Piano

East Northport, NY Matthew
received his Bachelor’s from Indiana University
and his Master’s Degree from Boston University
where he will continue as a Doctoral student
in the Fall. He has received Awards from ASCAP
previously and attended Aspen Music School.
An active pianist, he has played accordion in
productions of operas by Berg, Barber and Weill
and his own music for Shakespeare’s “Measure
for Measure”. He is organist for the Allston
Congregational Church in Massachusetts and is
an Affiliated Artist at MIT.
Cody
Westheimer
BAMBOO for Shakuhachi and Orchestra

Santa Barbara, CA Cody
graduated from the University of Southern California.
He is influenced by the tradition of Japanese
music, specifically Toru Takemitsu. He began
studying Japanese shakuhachi three years ago.
The award winning work was performed by the
USC Symphony Orchestra. Cody has also participated
in ASCAP’s Film Scoring Workshop.

Lee Wong
SONATINA FOR VIOLIN AND PIANO

is pursuing her Bachelor’s at The Juilliard
School. She has received ASCAP Awards, and awards
from the National Foundation for the Advancement
in the Arts, the Russian American Music Association
and the National Guild of Community Schools
of the Arts. She has attended Aspen and the
Tanglewood Instisute of Music. She is also active
as pianist. This summer , Nancy will attend
La Schola Cantorum Composition program in France.
Wang Xi
THE ORIGINAL FIRMAMENT for Piano Quintet

Xi is pursuing her Masters Degree at the Conservatory
of Music at The University of Missouri. She
received her Bachelor’s Degree from the
Shanghai Conservatory. Wang Xi is the Pianist
for Musica Nova at UMKC. Her music has been
heard on BBC and Radio-Shanghai. This summer,
she will attend the Composers Conference at
Wellesley College in Massachusetts and the Aspen
Music Festival.
