ASCAP Presents... at 17th Annual
Billboard Latin Music Conference & Awards

Lena performing at Yuca

ASCAP's Latin Membership Department presented an exciting line-up of events during the 2006 Billboard Latin Music Conference and Awards, held April 24-27 at The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach in Miami Beach. Attended by over 1,000 industry professionals that help to create, produce, promote and distribute the hottest genre on the charts today, the conference culminated in a star-studded televised Awards show featuring live performances by top Latin superstars.

On Wednesday, April 26th, the ASCAP Presents… Making the Deal panel session kicked-off ASCAP's day of events with a lively discussion about how contracts, advances and budgets are really cut and negotiated. The panel of executives, from different aspects of the business, included Mauricio Abaroa (President, EarthTown Entertainment), Ivan Alvarez (Sr. VP, Universal Music Publishing, Latin America), Ana Rosa Santiago, ASCAP Director Latin Department - Puerto Rico, Luana Pagani (Senior VP Marketing, Sony BMG International) and Marc Stollman (Attorney at Law, Stollman & Grubman). Gabriela Benitez, Director Latin Department, West Coast, ASCAP moderated the panel.

In the afternoon, Alexandra Lioutikoff, ASCAP Senior VP Latin Membership was among the panel of judges who had the difficult task of selecting a winner for the first-ever "We Hear the Future" Artist Showcase & Competition. Six signed and unsigned acts competed for the honor, which was won by Colombian rock quartet the Monas. The judges included Leila Cobo (Latin Bureau Cheif, Billboard), Stephanie Fisch (Senior VP, Endemol USA Latino), Francisco Serrano (GM, Lunario/Auditorio Nacional, Mexico), Ricardo Montaner (Artist, EMI Televisa), Jorge Pino (VP Music Division, Venevision Music) Adrian Posse (Senior Creative VP, EMI/Televisa) and Jon Secada (Artist).

The Billboard Q&A with Daddy Yankee provided an up close and personal discussion with the reggaetón superstar. Recently named ASCAP's 2005 Latin Songwriter of the Year, Yankee discussed the many facets of his artistic and business enterprises as well as the success of his album "Barrio Fino." Since its release in 2004, the album has sold more than 1.6 million copies in the U.S. and was the first reggaeton album to debut at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Latin albums chart.

ASCAP's action-packed day of activities concluded with its highly popular Latin Acoustic Showcase. Held annually at Yuca Lounge, the packed audience of music industry tastemakers was treated to live performances by a stellar line-up of artists including Rayo, Jeremias, Lena and Victor Manuelle.
